A Dutch man wanted in his home country to face charges of multiple counts of rape and child abuse this afternoon consented to his return to The Netherlands to face the charges.

Martijn Ramses Waalboer, 42, who resides in Zebbug and who is a leading affiliate in a gaming company, is wanted to face charges of multiple rape and child abuse that allegedly took place between 2005 and February 2013. He is also accused of breach of trust and abuse of authority.

Before Magistrate Marseann Farrugia, he consented to his extradition as he wanted to go to Holland to contest the charges being brought against him.

Mr Waalboer asked the court to be granted bail so that he could pack his belongings with his 21-year-old son, as they have been in Malta for two years.

"I want to leave Malta in a normal way. There is a lot of stuff that has to be packed. Can't you place me on house arrest or order me to go to the police station to say hello every now and then? I also need to make arrangements with my landlord," he told the court.

But Magistrate Farrugia explained that once he consented to his extradition, the law leaves her no option but to remand him in custody until arrangements are made for his return to Holland.

Deputy Attorney General Donatella Frendo Dimech and Police Inspector Mario Cuschieri prosecuted while lawyer Abigail Bugeja appeared for the man.
