Dons promoted: MK Dons will play Championship football for the first time in the club’s brief history next season after sealing automatic promotion on a tense final day of the League One campaign. The Milton Keynes club, formed in 2004, began the afternoon in third place and a point behind Preston who blew their chance of a top-two finish by losing 1-0 at relegation-threatened Colchester. Karl Robinson’s team ended the season in style with a 5-1 home win against bottom side Yeovil.

Dutch Cup: Albert Rusnak scored twice for Groningen as they won their first major trophy with a 2-0 victory over holders PEC Zwolle in yesterday’s Dutch Cup final. Signed at the start of the season after being released by Manchester City, the 20-year-old Slovak striker struck after 64 minutes and again with 15 minutes to go to give the northern club the trophy 26 years after their only previous cup final appearance, when they were comprehensively beaten. Groningen qualify for next season’s Europa League.

Blackpool: Blackpool are facing a Football Association investigation after Saturday’s Championship game against Huddersfield was abandoned when hundreds of fans invaded the pitch in protest against the troubled club’s owners. Already-relegated Blackpool’s miserable season took a turn for the worse in the 48th minute of the Bloomfield Road encounter when hundreds of home fans took to the pitch and unveiled banners against the Oyston family’s running of the club.

A-League: Melbourne City ripped up the form book with a 2-0 win over Wellington Phoenix in the first round of the A-League play-offs yesterday to set up a semi-final meeting with neighbours Melbourne Victory. Sydney FC will play Adelaide Reds, who beat Brisbane Roar 2-1 on Friday, in next weekend’s other last four encounter with the winners going on to meet on May 17 to decide Australia’s champions.
