I was interested to read the article ‘Queen Elizabeth’s Malta home in disrepair’ (The Sunday Times of Malta, April 26).

When we are in Malta, we live just a short walk from Villa Guardamangia. A couple of years ago, I wrote to Buckingham Palace to enquire whether anything could be done to renovate the building which, on the outside at least, is in a dreadful state.

I received a reply from the Queen’s secretary to say that Her Majesty would not be able to interfere in the affairs of another sovereign state.

A few weeks later, I attended the Malta Day celebrations in London and mentioned it to the Maltese High Commissioner, who said that he had received some communication from the Palace about it. However, he did not go into any detail.

With the impending Commonwealth summit coming up in November, I agree with Astrid Vella of Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar that this might be an opportune moment for the government to take action.
