‘Wind-chasers in the central Mediterranean: seabird research and conservation in the Maltese islands’ is the title of a public lecture by Benjamin Metzger, head of research, Malta Seabird Pro-ject, on Tuesday from 6 to 7pm.

It will be held at the new Biology resource room, Department of Biology of the University’s Faculty of Science, Msida campus. Attendance is free.

The EU response to children trafficking

‘The EU response to trafficking in children’ is the theme of a public seminar on Thursday from 10am to noon. It is organised by the University’s Faculty of Laws in collaboration with the Office of the European Commission against Trafficking in Human Beings at P.P. Saydon Hall, Arts Lecture Theatre (ALT) at the University’s Msida campus.

Myria Vassiliadou, EU anti-trafficking coordinator in the DG Justice Office of the European Commission, will present the EU’s new legal and policy framework to address human trafficking, with special focus on children and child trafficking. She will also address the challenges to prosecute and convict traffickers, using a human rights and victims’ centred approach.

Keats as a surgeon at Guy’s Hospital

‘Mr Keats, one of the surgeons at Guy’s Hospital’ is the title of a public seminar by Nicholas Roe of St Andrews University on Thursday at 6.30pm at the National Library, Valletta, organised by the University’s Department of English.

John Keats’s medical training and experiences at Guy’s Hospital infiltrated his poetry in surprising ways. A new account of Keats at work as a surgeon offers a rare glimpse of Keats in action as a surgeon at Guy’s. Roe will explore the implications of this intriguing episode in Keats’s life and career as a surgeon and poet.

The EU and the Mediterranean

‘An evolving EU engaging a changing Mediterranean region’ is the theme of the annual Jean Monnet chair conference of the University’s Institute for European Studies to be held on May 12 at Dar l-Ewropa, Valletta.
