On numerous occasions, the Minister for Transport, Joe Mizzi, claimed that the bus fares would not increase and the card system would save money.

After the publication of the new fare structure, unfortunately, the opposite is true. For commuters who travel to work by bus every day, a 90-day ticket costs €72. This option is not available to commuters anymore and instead they will be billed €26 every 30 days.

In essence, the 90-day bus fare has increased to €78. Although paying €2 extra every month does not break the bank, this goes against the minister’s word, as the card system does not save money.
