A school minibus driver was lucky to escape with only minor injuries after a collision with a truck in Madliena yesterday morning.

According to the police, the driver, a 46-year old man from Birkirkara, was driving a van full of children to school when it collided with the truck at around 7.40am.

A section of the truck’s trailer appeared to have smashed through the minivan’s windscreen and the side of the vehicle during the collision, but the police said the children and the driver of the truck, a 38-year old man from Naxxar, were all unharmed.

Sources said the children, reportedly students at St Michael’s School in Pembroke, were shaken and some were crying after the accident, while the van driver was overtaken by panic and lost consciousness briefly.

Triq Pedidalwett in Madliena, where the collision took place, was briefly closed while the condition of the driver was established, before being reopened to traffic later in the morning.

Members of the Rapid Intervention Unit assisted the St Julian’s district police in investigating the incident.
