Dievole is one of the oldest wine estates in Tuscany. Its first vintage dates back to 1090 when two farmers, Vinizio del Fu Sichelmi and Rodolfino del Fu Ardimanno paid two chickens, three loaves of bread and six Lucchesi pure silver sovereign coins to secure the rights to a rich, lush land known as Dieulele or ‘divine valley’, and to start making wine.

The original contract, which was stipulated by the Notary Public Bellundo and dates back to May 10, 1090 still exists today and can be found in the archives of the city of Siena. Dieulele was called the divine valley for one simple reason: its terroir was and still is perfect for growing native Tuscan grape varietals, the most significant of which is the Sangiovese grape.

Over the years the name Dieulele evolved to Dievole, but the tradition of making high-quality wine has remained unchanged. Today the Dievole estate is situated in the heart of Chianti Classico and comprises of 370 hectares all encompassed within a single estate close to the Etruscan village of Vagliagli.
