Updated - The GWU has warned of possible industrial action affecting the bus service on Saturday because of an industrial dispute with Malta Public Transport.

In a statement, the union said the Spanish-owned company had reduced some workers' wages. It said it had given the company a Friday deadline to refund the money deducted from wages. If that did not happen, industrial action including a bus strike would be held on Saturday.

The union said it had written to MPT expressing disagreement with the company's decision to cut workers' wages when they the agreed hours of work were not achieved.

The union said wages could not be reduced unless there was agreement with the workers involved.

In a reaction, Malta Public transport said  the workers were being paid for all the hours they worked, and therefore no deduction in wages had taken place.

Notwithstanding, the company said it was in touch with the General Workers Union to hold an urgent meeting tomorrow to better understand how to resolve this dispute, and avoid any disruption in service.
