A man who had originally been charged with raping his wife has been placed on probation and ordered to carry out 100 hours of community work after the woman dropped the charges against him.

Mohamed Ramadan had originally been charged with raping his former wife, holding her against her will, violently assaulting her and causing her to fear violence. He had also been charged with relapsing and escaping from police custody.

However, Magistrate Aaron Bugeja heard the woman dropping the criminal complaint she had filed against her former husband, specifically the rape and the violent indecent assault. Mr Ramadan then admitted to holding his wife against her will, escaping from custody and to relapsing.

Magistrate Bugeja said a prison sentence was "not ideal" given that the accused was raising his young children after the wife left Malta.

The court said it would be more opportune if the man could benefit from rehabilitation and an integration process through a probation order and community work. He therefore placed him on probation for a year and ordered him to carry out 100 hours of work in the community to "pay for his mistakes".

Police Inspector Sylvana Briffa prosecuted. Lawyer Jason Grima was defence counsel.
