Tranmere: Tranmere Rovers’ unbroken 94-year spell in the Football League came to an end yesterday with a 3-2 defeat at Plymouth Argyle. The fourth tier side, who joined the league in 1921 but have long been eclipsed by local powerhouses Liverpool and Everton, had lost their previous four matches and parted company with manager Micky Adams last weekend. Cheltenham were also relegated to the minor league for the first time since 1999.

Gundogan: Manchester United are close to agreeing a £21.5m deal to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, according to Sky sources. Gundogan, 24, is out of contract at the end of the 2015-16 season and Dortmund are thought to be willing to sell this summer to avoid losing him for nothing. Gundogan began his career with Bochum, before moving to Nuremberg.

Rich list: Lewis Hamilton re-mains the richest sportsman in Britain with a fortune of £88 million but Wayne Rooney has overtaken Jenson Button to be in second place in the 2015 Sunday Times Sport Rich List. F1 champion Hamilton, who lives as a tax exile in Monaco, remains on pole position in the list but his fortune has spiralled by £20 million on last year. Rooney’s overall wealth is up £12 million to £72 million. The Manchester United and England skipper remains on course to join David Beckham as the only British footballer to amass a fortune of more than £100 million.

Mihajlovic: Sinisa Mihajlovic is likely to leave Sampdoria at the end of the season and his next job could be at Napoli, reports in Italy said yesterday. Sportmediaset believe that the Serbian coach has already decided to move on and he will announce his decision this week. Rafa Benitez’s Napoli future has looked increasingly unstable and rumours about Mihajlovic replacing the Spaniard have been circulating for weeks, although nothing has been made official.
