The Sicilian port of Catania welcomed another 84 migrants on this morning .

They were rescued from a sinking dinghy off the coast of Libya after making a distress call to coast guards in Palermo.

Help arrived just in time to pick them up off the sinking dinghy.

Many of the migrants were suffering from scabies.

As they disembarked one Tunisian man and a Syrian were appearing in a Catania court facing charges of homicide and people-trafficking. Prosecutors believe the Tunisian was the captain of the migrant boat that sank off Libya's coast last weekend losing more than 700 people on board.

The man and his suspected Syrian crew member deny any involvement.

Shocked by that fatal shipwreck EU leaders held an emergency meeting on yesterday.

They agreed to triple naval search missions in the Mediterranean, restoring EU funding to last year's level.

Critics say the measure does not go far enough and is too concerned with border security and not enough with saving lives.

Italy, bearing the brunt of the flood of migrant arrivals, says it is a big step forward.

Officials said the difference could be felt within days.

Italy warned that, after nearly 2,000 deaths so far this year out of nearly 40,000 people making the crossing, a summer season was starting that could push total arrivals on its shores this year to 200,000, an increase of 30,000 over 2014.
