Parliament will reconvene today, despite being in recess, to discuss the migration crisis, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said yesterday.

In a statement, the government said Dr Muscat had written to House Speaker Anġlu Farrugia asking him to reconvene Parliament for an emergency sitting.

The move follows a similar letter sent yesterday to Dr Farrugia by Opposition leader Simon Busuttil.

Dr Busuttil requested a parliamentary debate of the Mediterranean migration crisis, saying it was “fitting” for the people to be informed of international events.

The House is currently in Easter recess and was expected to reconvene on May 4. Dr Muscat is expected to inform the House of the discussion that unfolded during the European Summit meeting held yesterday.
