Extremely saddened as I am at the news of Paul's death, I am not surprised. He had been poorly of late and, never wanting to be a burden by lingering on, he passed away peacefully.

Paul was like a second father to me, always ready with a warm embrace wherever and whenever we met. For I had known him ‘forever’, since he and his first wife, Rina, were close friends of my parents'. Indeed, apart from my siblings, Paul was the last remaining link with them.

I cherish the still vivid memories when, barely in my teens and midway through that phase in my life, I saw him in various roles – Ernani, Don Josè, Manrico and Otello – amid the excitement of an adoring public. After that it was talking shop, sharing family news, the tragedies and the happiness.

Happiness returned with his second wife, Bice, companion and support and a great character in her own right. To those who do not remember his halcyon days as singer he will always be remembered for his wise words of advice to aspiring singers and to music in Malta in general.

His name will also be remembered for his connection with Joseph Calleja for he had been that younger star's only voice coach and mentor. Many times we met abroad when Calleja sang, whether in Wexford, London or Vienna.

In his time, Paul was an excellent cultural ambassador for Malta and his erstwhile protégé continues doing the same.

I shall miss his warmth and quasi-paternal shadow.

My deep condolences to Bice, William, Ronnie, Michael, grandchildren and their families.

Goodbye dear friend. May you rest in peace.
