The two men arrested in Italy on suspicion of involvement in last weekend's migrant boat disaster have been identified as Mohammed Ali Malek (seen above, (left) and Mahmud Bikhit (right).

They were among 27 survivors picked up by the Italian patrol craft Gregoretti and taken to Catania last night after stopping briefly in Malta.

The two were the captain and first mate respectively on the large boat which capsized late on Saturday. Up to 900 are feared to have died.

The captain, a Tunisian, has been charged with multiple homicide.
