ABELA. On April 17, JOE, of Sliema, aged 83, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family. He leaves to mourn his loss his beloved wife Marlene née Cuschieri, his dear children Alan and Catherine and their children Michaela, Raphael and Daniel; David and Angela and their children Kristina, Lisa and Emma; Annelise and Stephen Attard and their children Julia and Mandy; his siblings Frances, Constantine, Madeleine, Em­manuel, Doris, Rina and Paul and their families, his sisters-in-law, Sr Olga, SJA, of Jerusalem, and Josephine. The funeral leaves Capua Hospital today for St Julian’s parish church where Mass will be said at 2pm, followed by interment in the family vault at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery (entrance through back gate). May he rest in the peace of the Risen Lord.

BUTTIGIEG. On April 19, FRANCIS (k/a Puzzie), of Floriana, residing in Fgura, aged 69, passed away peacefully, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife Joy, his children Judith and her husband Leo, Lisa, Stacey and her partner Johann, grandchildren Naomi, Chanelle, Christie, Tiana, Michaela and Kelsey, great-grandson Kelvin, his brother and sisters, their families, other relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital tomorrow at 2pm for St Publius parish church Floriana, where Mass præsente cadavere will be said at at 2.30pm followed by interment at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. CACHIA. On April 18, at Mater Dei Hospital, GEORGINA, aged 83, of St Julian’s, passed away peacefully comforted by the rites of Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her loss her brothers Harry, widower of Rosemary, Josie and Monica, Victor and Tessa, Tony and Joyce, Paul and Louise Anne, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital today at 1.30pm for the Carmelite parish church, Balluta, where Mass præsente cadavere will be celebrated at 2pm followed by interment at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery (entrance through the back gate). Donations to Id-Dar tal-Providenza will be appreciated. Lord, grant her eternal rest.

CASSAR. On April 18, CHARLIE died suddenly aged 83. Sadly missed by his wife Lina, his sister Ġanna of Australia, Rose and their families, his brother-in-law Victor and Mary Grech, his nephews and nieces and friends. Funeral Mass will be held to­morrow at 9.30am at Sacro Cuor parish church, Sliema. God, rest his soul.

VASSALLO. On April 19, MARLENE née PORTELLI, aged 83, wife of the late Philip, passed away peacefully comforted by the rights of Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her loss her children Mark and his wife Theresa, Vik, widow of Michael Falkingham, Patrick and his wife Catherine, Karen and her husband Ivan Azzopardi, all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her brother Vivi Portelli and his wife Doris, her sisters-in-law, Marcelle, widow of George Mallia and Monica Vassallo, her nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. The funeral cortege will leave her home in Sliema tomorrow for St Gregory’s parish church where Mass præsente cadavere will be said at 8.45am, followed by interment at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to Hospice Malta, Balzan, will be greatly appreciated. The family wish to thank all the dedicated doctors and staff at Hospice Malta for their untiring compassionate care and support, as well as her dedicated personal carers Rose and Ellen. WIRTH. Capt. WILLIAM H., on April 7, aged 94, passed away peacefully comforted by the rites of the Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his beloved wife Jolanda (Jolly) née Vianello, his daughter Ingrid Moebus and his grandson Mark Moebus, his sisters and brothers Mollie Wirth, Yvonne Marich, Irene Wirth, Laurie and his wife Anna, Babs Cutugno, Edgar and his wife Nanette, Monica Borg Testaferrata, Risette Wirth, and his in-laws Gladys Wirth, Ronnie Pace Decesare, Lucio Lenardon, Rosanna and Mariella Vianello, numerous nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital tomorrow at 1.30pm for the Carmelite parish church in Balluta, where Mass præsente cadavere will be said at 2pm, followed by interment in the family grave at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. Symposium on Paceville

Paceville’s social and cultural value will be debated at a public symposium on Wednesday from 5.30 to 7.30pm at Europa House, St Paul’s Street, Valletta, as part of the University’s Work in Progress in the Social Studies.

The speakers are anthropologist John Micallef, who will present a paper entitled ‘A case for Mr Hyde: Paceville and the essential chaos’, anthropologist Marguerite Pace-Bonello, whose paper is entitled ‘From fortress island to fortress city?’, and journalist and environmentalist James Debono, whose paper is entitled ‘Paceville: uniformity in deformity’.

The symposium will be chaired by Elise Billiard-Pisani. Students and the public are invited to attend.
