The Nationalist Party has called for more naval assets to be deployed in the Mediterranean to save lives.

In a statement, the shadow minister for home affairs, Beppe Fenech Adami, and the shadow minister for foreign affairs, Roberta Metsola, said the events of the last few days showed yet again how crucial it was for Europe to take a concrete stand on migration and move on from empty statements,

"There is a moral obligation on every EU Prime Minister to act and to act now. We cannot allow the Mediterranean to continue its descent into a cemetery of broken promises, broken hopes and broken lives.

"Prime Ministers cannot bicker about increased pull factors while bodies continue to wash up on our beaches."

As for the medium term, the PN said improving stability in Libya was crucial as were legal migration options and helping countries in Africa get back on their feet.

"The Nationalist Party call upon every EU Prime Minister to act now, share responsibility and acknowledge that this is a European challenge that requires a European solution," the shadow ministers said.
