Kane: Harry Kane was the toast of Tottenham once again as the England striker scored his 30th goal of the season in their 3-1 Premier League win against Newcastle United yesterday. The 21-year-old has reached that total in all competitions and is the first Spurs player since Gary Lineker in 1991-92 to reach 30 in a season.

Van Gaal: Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is demanding almost £75,000 in damages after a company used a picture of him in an advert without his permission. Van Gaal has promised to give any cash he is awarded to charity.

Death penalty: An Egyptian court yesterday took a step towards imposing the death penalty on 11 men for involvement in deadly soccer stadium violence in 2012. The judge referred the sentencing to Egypt’s Grand Mufti, the country’s most senior religious authority, a step towards the death penalty. The Port Said incident was Egypt’s worst ever soccer disaster, killing more than 70 fans and injuring at least 1,000.

Di Santo winner: Werder Bremen edged past bottom side Hamburg 1-0 courtesy of an 84th-minute penalty by Franco Di Santo that kept them in the running for a Europa League spot. Argentine Di Santo converted his spot-kick for his 13th goal of the season after Hamburg’s Valon Behrami had brought down Zlatko Junuzovic and was sent off as new Hamburg coach Bruno Labbadia made a losing return to their bench.
