The journey that a group of students from St Aloysius College’s Sixth Form has travelled so far has been full of new experiences and initiatives.

All 10 members joined Fusion, a Young Enterprise company, at the beginning of the scholastic year with one simple aim: to learn as much as possible through participation. It was a long road getting to where the team is today.

After many brainstorming sessions, the team decided to tackle a major local concern, that of obesity, which is a major health concern in Malta. Research shows that local obesity rates are among the highest in the World Health Organisation European region.

With this in mind, Fusion created both a physical product and an app which focuses on educating the Maltese population to become more health-conscious.

The Fusion bottle contains a little compartment in the middle, which allows you to infuse water with fruit, herbs and teas of various types and combinations. This serves as a healthy alternative to sugary drinks. The strength of this product lies in the design of the tailor-made bottle.

In addition, the company also created an app to encourage individuals to put aside more time for exercise and physical training. The app offers a series of different routes and challenges around Malta and Gozo which you could use while taking an early morning jog or stroll together with various health tips. The app also contains a page that allows you to track your daily water intake and also gives you information about the many different combinations of fruits you can use in the Fusion bottle. The link between the Fusion bottle and app makes the product and service very different and unique.

Throughout the project, all members of Fusion were ably assisted by their business advisors Simon Mifsud and Juliana Romeiko and their link teacher Keith Sammut.

This experience was made possible thanks to the Junior Achievement Young Enterprise (JA-YE) Malta Foundation, a non-governmental non-profit organisation that aims to provide entrepreneurship education programmes at all levels of the educational system. JA-YE Malta brings the public and private sectors together to provide students in primary and secondary schools and early university with high-quality education programmes to further educate them on enterprise, entrepreneurship, business and economics.
