Latest update - adds video - - The Nationalist Party has won the race for St Paul's Bay by a slim margin, having rolled back a 500-vote majority which Labour won in 2012.

The triumph was the biggest plum in the council elections held in 34 localities on Saturday week. The Labour Party's gains were Munxar council, which it won from the PN, and Floriana, which it won after the independent mayor failed to get re-elected.

The PL won an overall majority of 53.2 per cent in the local councils but the PN managed to cut a 17% lead to labour in the 2012 elections by almost half.

The parties were in a dead heat for most of the race for St Paul's Bay council and it was the final transfer of votes between eliminated candidates which decided the issue.

The Nationalist Party won 47.68 per cent of the vote (3,7701 votes)  to 46.8 per cent for Labour (3,639) but it will be the vote preferences which dictated which party won the majority of seats.

AD won 3.5 per cent of votes on this locality, with 1.8 per cent going to an independent candidate.

The mayorship will return to Graziella Galea, the former mayor who was by far the favourite PN candidate, winning 1,546 first-count votes.
