How green is your campus?

Although there has been a lot of effort to make the campus greener and more pleasing to the eye, we’re still way behind as the University administration and students in general have yet to adopt a green culture. Matthew Charles Zammit, LL.B (Hons), 2nd year.

Mcast’s Art and Design campus is quite a green environment as we have recycling bins around the school. Jonathan Brincat, Extended Diploma in Creative Media (Level 4), Year 1.

There are a number of initiatives in place, although I have serious doubts over students’ familiarity with them and their overall widespread use. Naomi Cachia, LL.B (Hons), 3rd year.

Are recycle bins the be-all for a sustainable campus, or is more impetus needed?

Recycle bins are necessary steps, but they’re only the first ones. It would be foolish to stop there and not implement more rigid procedures. Matthew Charles Zammit

Recycle bins are important for a campus, because if students start recycling as a daily routine they will follow this up at home and their siblings and family will also start recycling. Jonathan Brincat

Although it would be positive to have more such bins, recycling is far from the crux of sustainability on campus. The University administration has to provide the impetus for a more sustainable campus by implementing energy-saving measures, such as in the new IT Services building. Initiatives by the University Students Council (KSU) are not enough. Naomi Cachia

What green improvements would you like to see on campus?

I would love it if most, if not all, students at University adopted a constant eco-green approach. Regarding the University administration, with the right planning the possibilities for improvement are endless. Matthew Charles Zammit

I wish our institute recycled more material especially paper, so that more trees would be saved. Jonathan Brincat

Incorporating energy-saving measures such as solar panels should be a priority. Investment in green infrastructure is key in promoting an eco-conscious lifestyle. Naomi Cachia
