Frank Salt Real Estate installed its first automated external defibrillator (AED), with its St Julian’s branch being chosen for the pilot project.

The AED is a fully computerised machine used to deliver an electric shock to the heart of a casualty suffering from ventricular fibrillation, which is the most common cause of cardiac arrest. Prompt intervention with an AED can dramatically increase the chances of survival.

Frank Salt Real Estate has also given additional training to members of the St Julian’s branch staff in the use of AEDs and first aid principles in cardio pulmonary resuscitation. The acquisition of this machine forms part of the company’s corporate social responsibility programme.

Sudden cardiac arrest is the most common cause of death from heart disease, accounting for more than 60 per cent of all cardiac deaths. This condition occurs in about one in 1,000 people aged 35 and older. This silent killer can strike anyone, anywhere without warning or any previous symptoms.

“Frank Salt Real Estate is one of the first companies in St Julian’s and Paceville to install such a device”, said company director Douglas Salt. “We have chosen this branch due to its key location in an area that sees considerable traffic of Maltese and foreigners. While we hope not to make use of the AED, we hope to be able to contribute to saving lives should the need arise.”

The company’s HR department carries out regular risk assessments, while also ensuring the availability and upkeep of first aid boxes within the premises and that selected members of staff can take the necessary action should medical emergencies or critical incidents arise.
