Theatrencore are staging the theatrical version of what is possibly one of the most well-known films of the 1980s, Children of a Lesser God.

The play chronicles the love story that develops between a deaf young woman and her speech therapist. Like most other love stories, the relationship kicks off with a honeymoon period but, as soon as the lovers get married, problems arise. The deaf girl insists that people around her need to use sign language to communicate with her and she refuses categorically to speak. This leads to marital tension.

This is the first play in Malta that is accessible to the deaf community, thanks to the use of sign language in the play. However, the play can be understood by anyone, even without the knowledge of sign language. The main roles are played by Charles Sammut and Sharon Bezzina, who are supported by Joseph Zammit, Mariella Muscat, Stefan Farrugia, Monica Attard and Alexandra Camilleri Warne. Set design is by Adrian Mamo, whereas Michael Quinton is in charge of the sound design.

During the production, all senses – particularly the sense of smell – will be used to give the audience a full experience of the action of the play.

Children of a Lesser God is directed by Tyrone Grima and will be staged on May 1 and 2 at the Blue Box Theatre, M Space, Msida. The project is supported by the Malta Arts Fund.
