A boat carrying more than 90 migrants arrived at Palermo this morning after being intercepted by the Italian Navy.

International aid organizations estimate around 20,000 migrants have reached the Italian coast this year. 13,000 arrived in the past week alone. About 1000 people have drowned.

A Somali woman and her sick baby were taken to hospital in Italy yesterday after being rescued by a Maltese-registered container ship.

The other migrants, who remained onboard the container ship, are part of some 13,000 people rescued over the past week alone as sailing conditions improve in the region.
