Nineteen new mayors have so far been elected for the 34 localities where council elections were held last week.

Among them are a former parliamentary secretary – Edwin Vassallo – who returns to Mosta council, and former MP Karl Gouder in St Julians. Both are in the PN. The current mayors in those localities did not contest.

The only councils which have changed political majorities so far are Floriana and Munxar, which both went to Labour. Davina Sammut Hili takes over the mayor’s chair from independent mayor Nigel Holland in Floriana while Carmen Said (Labour) takes over in Munxar.

Among the Labour councils, Sarah Agius outvoted long-serving Alfred Grixti in Zebbug; Terence Agius became the youngest mayor in this round of elections when he won most votes in Kirkop. Joe Casha takes over in Senglea, Christian Sammut in Hamrun, Terence Ellul in Sta Lucija, Konrad Borg Manche in Gzira Sandro Azzoprdi in Dingli and Domenic Grima in Paola.

Kevin Barun becomes mayor of Birzebbuga and Horace Gauci in Marsaxlokk after the incumbents did not seek re-election.

In the PN councils, Giljan Aquilina just outvoted the serving mayor to take over in Gharghur. Ian Spiteri was elected mayor of Balzan after the long-serving mayor John Zammit Montebello did not contest.

Noel Formosa returned to the mayorship of San Lawrenz after not having contested the last election. Also in Gozo, Franco Ciangura was elected mayor of Ghajnsielem. Edward Said was elected mayor of Nadur, taking over from his brother Charles who did not contest.

The only undecided contest is St Paul's Bay, where the PN and the PL are in a tight race.
