Various commentators are presenting different factors which contributed to the referendum result, such as solidarity or scaremongering, or the Labour Party backing the Yes campaign.
However, the fact that the Yes campaign was positive whereas the No was rather aggressive is hardly being mentioned. The slogan SHout – whatever it stands for – is in itself negative. A peaceful co-existence – one of the positive points emphasized by Yes – demands a mature dialogue rather than antagonism.
As Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said, confrontation has to make way for dialogue. The hunters have to practise their sport as law-abiding citizens. Anything less than this will have zero tolerance.
Hunters already appreciate the support of the electorate and FKNK officials are insisting on the respect due to the people.
Muscat also referred to No votes as a high percentage of the electorate voting for the environmental agenda to be pushed forward. May I add that voting for the right of hunters to enjoy their hobby in spring does not mean one is not interested in pushing forward the environmental agenda as well.
Having the environment at heart without having human beings at heart is meaningless.
Seeking common ground for effective communication enhances not only the physical and natural environment but equally the social environment.
Understanding and respecting the different perspectives from which we look at things can help us accentuate what unites us rather than what divides us. Then we can have more time to enjoy our environment united in variety in a better world.
