The only match from the Gozo FA competitions last weekend was the last fixture from the Melita Division Two championship.

Table-toppers Għajnsielem, who had secured the title the previous week, turned defeat into a 2-1 victory in their clash with runners-up Munxar Falcons.

Backed by their numerous supporters who turned up at the stadium to celebrate their team’s return to the top flight, the Blacks could have opened the scoring on 20 minutes but Charlon Tabone’s strike, from a corner action, hit the crossbar.

Munxar hit back and on 38 minutes, Paul Parnis netted with a low drive following a melee inside the opponents’ box.

Għajnsielem staged an immediate reaction to level the scores before half-time through Michael Bezzina who concluded a fine move involving Jason Portelli, Tabone and Joseph Attard.

The Blacks continued to dictate matters after the break, going on to score the winner.

They were awarded a penalty after Donald Borg tripped Bezzina and Portelli converted from the spot.

Portelli’s first attempt had been stopped by keeper George Vella but the referee ordered a re-take as the Munxar no.1 had moved off the line.

At the end of the match, GFA president Samuel Azzopardi and other officials presented the medals and trophy to the Għajnsielem players amidst the celebrations of their supporters.
