An army of volunteers is expected to ‘sweep’ the country in a national clean-up on May 9, encouraged by last’s year’s feat when 28,700 kilos of trash were collected from 21 sites across Malta.

About 1,263 volunteers took part in the 2014 campaign (picture) organised by the movement Let’s Do It Malta, which is hoping the number of participants will more than double to 3,000 this year.

Over 30 organisations have already confirmed their participation for the May event, when Malta joins 20 other Mediterranean countries organising national clean-up campaigns on the same day.

“Trash is becoming an invasive, offensive problem all around us. Wherever one looks, there is always something that doesn’t belong. This is not a problem we can solve individually. Together we can show that our country deserves to be kept clean for our sake and for the sake of future generations,” the local organisers said.

Let’s Do It started in Estonia in 2008 and, to date, the network is spread in more than 100 countries, attracting nine million participants for clean-up campaigns worldwide.
