It had been a few years since I last visited the Garden of Serenity (better known as the Chinese Garden) in Santa Lucia but, being such a lovely day, I decided to take my 92-year-old mother there.

It was a real shock. A lot of work was recently done to upgrade it and there are several new pagodas and some really nice statues but whereas once it used to be so very well kept it is now totally neglected and full of weeds that replace the lovely flowers that used to line the avenue.

When compared to the riot of colour provided by our roundabouts, this garden has nothing to show. Even the border outside the garden is full of weeds. It is a real shame.

Is it possible that of the many people employed with the government there aren’t at least two who could look after this once beautiful garden? It was teeming with people so there is every reason to keep it tidy.

The huge pool, which used to have too many big goldfish in it, is now all green and slimy and the once big fish have turned into tiny one-inch species.

What about the Santa Lucia council?

Does this garden in their locality not fall under their responsibility and, if it does not, is it possible that they cannot put some pressure on some government department to look after it?

One last thing. The road the garden is in seems to be turning into a race track. This street certainly needs sleeping policemen before some nasty accident happens.

A young man came driving down so fast that a poor cat crossing the road seemed to freeze – it was really lucky that the driver managed to brake on time and luckier still it wasn’t some elderly person or mother with pram crossing the road.
