Athletics: Jessica Ennis-Hill will return to the Olympic Stadium this summer to take part in the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games. The 29-year-old is synonymous with the London 2012 venue after clinching heptathlon gold on ‘Super Saturday’, when British team-mates Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford also topped the podium. Ennis-Hill will return to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in July, taking part in the Diamond League meet as she builds towards the Rio Games in 2016 having missed the majority of last season after giving birth to her first child.

Cricket: A fine innings of 143 from Ian Bell helped England to recover from a terrible start and finish the first day of the first test against West Indies on 341 for five in Antigua. After being put into bat, England made a shaky start at the Vivian Richards Stadium and stumbled to 34 for three before lunch. But Bell and Joe Root (83) took control in the afternoon session with their 177 run partnership killing West Indies’ early momentum and then moving England into a strong position. Although Bell was removed late in the day after the hosts took the second new ball, England will still be satisfied by their day’s work.

Basket, NBA: New Orleans retained the upperhand in the battle for the final play-off spot in the Western Conference after Anthony Davis shone in the Pelicans’ 100-88 victory over Minnesota Timberwolves. The Pelicans are in a straight shootout with Oklahoma City Thunder for the eighth and last berth into the play-offs, but are in pole position heading into today’s final round of games. Victory means New Orleans can seal their top-eight spot with victory over San Antonio Spurs, who will go into the game on the back of an 11-match winning streak.

Tennis: Maria Sharapova has pulled out of Russia’s Fed Cup semi-final against Germany in Sochi this weekend with a leg injury. “I was really looking forward to playing in Sochi and taking part in the Fed Cup,” the world number two told the Russian Tennis Federation press service. “For me, it would have been the first time I would have had the opportunity to play in the city where I grew up. My team and I specially changed my timetable so that I could represent my country in the semi-final. However, unfortunately I picked up a leg injury and it did not allow me to be in the best condition to get ready for this tie.”
