Works on the Castille Square embellishment project started more than a month ago, but the area still lacks full signage and road markings, creating a potential accident blind spot at one corner, especially in the evenings.

Transport Malta employees have been assigned to manage traffic from early morning up to 5pm. After that, however, there is no one to guide traffic. The result is that last Monday, a vehicle passing through the square into Valletta from Triq Ġlormu Cassar crashed into another car coming out of the corner at Auberge de Castille. There were no injuries as both cars were moving slowly.

The incident occurred shortly after Transport Malta personnel had left the site. Both drivers blamed the lack of signage, saying there was no indication whatsoever of who was supposed to give way.

Venting her frustration with Times of Malta, one of the involved parties said the incident could have probably been avoided if proper markings had been in place.

“The situation was made even worse by the fact that the central part of the square has been cordoned off with a translucent hoarding, turning this junction into a blind spot. The least that authorities could have done was to affix a traffic mirror and install visible stop signs,” she complained.

She said taking the transport watchdog to court was not a feasible option.

When questioned, the Transport Ministry insisted there was proper signage on site pointing traffic approaching Castille to the Central Bank or central Valletta.

At the end of the day’s works, traffic is allowed to use the roundabout “as per normal traffic regulations”.

There was no mention of signage at that particular junction, however.
