The Malta Amateur Dramatic Club is presenting Alexi Kaye Campbell’s The Pride, a drama that counterpoints two parallel love stories of three characters that alternate between two very distinct times.

The play begins and ends with parallel images of two men on stage together.

Oliver and Philip are handsome Londoners in their late 20s or early 30s, palpably attracted to each other but unable to consummate the feeling.

But the Oliver and Philip in the first scene are not the Oliver and Philip in the last scene; though they share names, the two pairs are separated by 50 years.

Director Michael Mangion was drawn to this award-winning British drama because of its success at the Royal Court Theatre in London seven years ago, which was described as a “modern classic” and an “era-spanning masterpiece”.

A hilarious and heartfelt landmark play about courage, compassion and the fear of loneliness in life’s journey towards self-discovery

It is a hilarious and heartfelt landmark play about courage, compassion and the fear of loneliness in life’s journey towards self-discovery.

Philip, Oliver and Sylvia exist in a complex love triangle, living and loving simultaneously in the repressive 1950s and now in the present, more liberated but still imperfect; against a background of changing attitudes.

In the local play, Philip (Malcolm Galea) is the 1950s husband of Sylvia (Julia Calvert), while trying to suppress his feeling for Oliver (Philip Leone Ganado).

Oliver has come out in the 1950s and is quite liberated and knows what he wants, while today he is struggling with his urges. To him the play is a nod to history and a sense of where we have come from and what has been achieved.

Campbell’s brilliantly funny dialogue brings the characters to life. While it explores fate, love, fidelity and forgiveness, The Pride asks questions about contemporary life, but does not presume to answer any of them concretely.

• The Pride is being staged at St James Cavalier on April 24-26, May 1-3 and May 8-10 at 8pm. (Rated 18+).Tickets may be obtained by sending an e-mail to boxoffice@sjcav.com.mt, online from www.sjcav.org or by calling 2122 3200.
