LA Galaxy: Defending champions LA Galaxy beat Western Conference rivals Seattle Sounders 1-0 in Major League Soccer on Sunday courtesy of a header from veteran forward Alan Gordon. Omar Gonzalez headed a free-kick from Juninho across the goal and the 33-year-old Gordon, playing his 200th MLS game, nodded in from close range. The Galaxy were watched from the stands by former player David Beckham who is attempting to create a new team in Miami.

Portsmouth: Portsmouth have parted company with manager Andy Awford with four games left of another disappointing season. Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Morecambe was the final straw for the Fratton Park board, with Pompey having won just twice in their last ten League Two matches. Portsmouth say the decision was made by mutual consent, and that the 42-year-old could yet stay on at the club in another capacity.

Meier: Eintracht Frankfurt striker Alexander Meier, who leads the Bundesliga scoring list, will have knee surgery today and will be out for the rest of the season, the club said. The 32-year-old, who has 19 goals, has been nursing the injury since the start of the season and sometimes needs injections to play. Bayern Munich’s Arjen Robben, also currently injured, is second on 17 goals. Tests done in Switzerland yesterday revealed the extent of the injury and the need for surgery.

Rotherham: Rotherham have been charged with fielding an ineligible player in their Sky Bet Championship meeting with Brighton on Easter Monday. On-loan defender Farrend Rawson played 90 minutes in the Millers’ 1-0 win and boss Steve Evans claimed after the game that the Derby man’s youth loan had been extended until the end of the season. But Rawson was not involved in Rotherham’s 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough on Saturday, with Evans adding to the confusion afterwards by saying he had been recalled by the Rams.
