Milan breathed a sigh of relief with the news that the leg injury suffered by on-loan striker Mattia Destro is not as serious as first feared.

Destro was carried off on a stretcher in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Sampdoria following a challenge by Djamel Mesbah, and there were fears the Italy international had suffered a break.

However, Milan got good news from a scan yesterday.

A club statement said: “AC Milan announces that Mattia Destro has undergone tests on Monday.

“He has been diagnosed with a heavy bruising to the left tibia bone and his recovery time will be evaluated based on further tests.”

Destro has scored twice in nine league appearances since joining on loan from Roma in January.

The injury rules him out of Sunday’s derby against Inter, but the Rossoneri will hope he can return to help them before the end of the season.

Milan sit eighth in Serie A, seven points adrift of Sampdoria in the battle for European places.
