The locality of Floriana is passing through a very difficult time on account of the decline in its population. Together with others, I have been hammering ad nauseam on this problem and it seems that the authorities are insensitive to such justified claims.

Just before the presentation of the last Budget I had published an appeal to the government, through this newspaper, to consider commissioning a master plan for Floriana with a view to analysing and reporting on the overall situation of the suburb, and propose any actions needed to revive the population.

It was really shocking to hear in the Budget speech that “‘a masterplan is being prepared for Beltisebħ to develop offices for the Department of Inland Revenue”. I could not believe my ears!

Is it possible that after so many pleas for adequate decent housing to alleviate the residents of Floriana, the authorities intend to further develop office accommodation in the area of Beltisebħ which could be easily used as decent housing?

This is a clear message that the authorities intend to continue making an administrative city of Floriana. I am surprised by the local council’s silence notwithstanding that considerable time has lapsed since the speech. This is a very serious matter as the residents of Floriana are fast coming to the conclusion that their pleas are being totally ignored.

Floriana cannot afford more offices and if any development should take place in the town, this should be to accommodate the residents still living in sub-standard houses.

I appeal to the authorities, particularly the MPs representing Floriana, to take heed of our claims and to use their influence to revise this atrocious decision. If they truly consider themselves as being of service to the Floriana residents they should intervene.
