An educational open weekend on the theme ‘How plants can help us change the world’ is being held at Argotti Botanic Gardens, Floriana, from Friday to next Sunday. The activity will be inaugurated by Education Minister Evarist Bartolo.

The weekend provides a unique opportunity for students to discover unusual plants and learn biology outside the classroom. Through displays, demonstrations, experiments and hands-on activities, the event will promote a better understanding of plants and innovations in plant science.

Stalls will be set up to provide an outdoor learning experience exploring five main themes: plant diversity for multiple uses, herbs and medicine, plants and engineering, plants and waste water and plants and climate change.

Biology students in secondary schools and sixth forms, accompanied by their teachers, are invited to visit stalls to explore these five themes.

The event will be open to the public and children accompanied by guardians on Friday from 1.30 to 3.30pm, Saturday from 9am to 4pm and Sunday from 9am to 1pm.

The event is being organised by the University of Malta’s Argotti Botanic Gardens in cooperation with the Department of Biology of the Faculty of Science, the UK Society of Biology, the University Science Students’ Society (S Cubed) and the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (Mcast).
