British police recorded would-be robbers in a getaway car attempting to outrun them at speeds above 140 mph in a furious road chase last year.  

Video of the action, as seen from police cars and a helicopter, was released at the end of the trial of four men accused of attempting to rob a cash machine. The video shows the men driving fast in a stolen Audi RS7 on the M42 motorway near Tamworth in the West Midlands on September 29, 2014.

Footage from the police helicopter shows the men driving into a residential street before getting out of the car and running away. Some disappear into nearby buildings and one is later seen being dragged out of a hedge.

The men had been spotted in the early hours of the morning, trying to use an angle grinder, crowbars and a 'jaws of life' hydraulic cutter, used by emergency services to cut people from cars, to break into a cash machine in Kenilworth in Warwickshire, police said.

They spent eight minutes attempting to rob the cash machine, causing £20,000 of damage, before giving up and driving away in the stolen vehicle, they added.

Cutting equipment was found in the car alongside its original number plate.

All four men went on to admit charges of conspiracy to steal and aggravated vehicle-taking. All four received jail sentences.
