The Prime Minister this evening lost an opportunity to unite the country by not inviting the Opposition for the inauguration of the Malta-Sicily interconnector project, Nationalist Party leader Simon Busuttil said this evening.

Speaking on Net Television to close the local councils’ electoral campaign, Dr Busuttil said that everyone knew this was a Nationalist government project, it had thought it out and executed it. The only thing this government did, he said, was put it in place.

“Dr Muscat had the opportunity to unite the country but lost it by not inviting the opposition. Where there was a possibility of unity, he preferred division. Had I been Prime Minister I would have used this opportunity to unite the country, Joseph Muscat used it to divide it,” Dr Busuttil said.

He said that he was pleased that the project had been implemented because for the first time Malta was physically linked with Europe to obtain its electricity.

On Saturday’s elections in 34 localities, Dr Busuttil said the PN only had a majority in 14 and while the PN had obtained 40 per cent of the vote in these elections the last time they were held, Labour had obtained 57 per cent.

This meant that the starting point was a 17 per cent difference making it impossible for the PN to win these elections as such a gap could not be bridged in just two years.

However, it could start to close it and although the road ahead was long and tough, it had started to work on it and it was now up to the people to make a difference with their vote on Saturday.

The PN, he said, was making a difference as a party, as an Opposition, on the national level and also on a local level, in the daily life of people.

Dr Busuttil said he wanted politics that were built on honesty, accountability, transparency and meritocracy. Dr Muscat had also promised this but he failed to keep his promises once he was elected.

“People should judge with their vote on Saturday,” he said.
