Local councils can propose restoration projects, which will be carried out by the central government under the rules of a new scheme released today.

Culture and Local Government Minister Owen Bonnici said the scheme will be administered by the Restoration Directorate, which will take full responsibility for the chosen projects.

Councils have between May 1 and the end of June to propose projects for the restoration of buildings and monuments of a historic and artistic value within their boundaries.

A board will then select the projects and the Restoration Directorate will take charge of the works from the initial planning phase, to Mepa permits and on-site execution up till project completion.

Dr Bonnici said this will enable councils to propose priority projects for restoration works while strengthening the drive to protect the country’s cultural heritage.
