Marsa Magpies are the winners of the 2015 MCA Winter Wallop tournament after beating 2014 champions Melita Bees at the oval on Saturday.

Melita Bees won the toss and elected to field first. The Magpies took full advantage though and posted a superb score of 193 runs.

Andy Naudi played his best innings for the tournament and scored a half-century (51) from 26 balls. His repertoire included three fours and two sixes.

Haroon Najeed was not far off, blasting 48 runs from 21 balls, as Mark G. Sacco had opened the batting, giving his team a solid start as he made 34 runs from his 30 balls.

Sarfraz Ali, Sacco’s opening partner, made 17, Ronnie Sacco was 14 not out but Feroz Ahmed Akbar missed out after being run out for two runs.

Extras were costly for the Bees, totalling 27.

For Melita, Frank Spiteri took two wickets. Interestingly enough the Bees used nine bowlers.

Melita had a horrendous start in their reply, losing Frank Spiteri for five runs, Jack Barrit for 11 and Matt McKeogh for four.

The Bees were revived by Derek Ali, who scored 51 runs from his 30 balls and Joy Ghoseroy also played a hand in the comeback attempt by hitting 27 runs.

Unfortunately for the Bees, their batting display stopped there even though Garret Kampff (five runs), Tim Wheeler (ten not out), Ian Pendelbury (five) and Daniel Galea (three) all tried hard.

Marsa were outstanding in their bowling and they only gave away 13 extras in the Bees’ total of 131 runs.

Naudi took two wickets for the Magpies while Ronnie Sacco, Ali, Malik Asif and Majeed picked a wicket each.
