The Nationalist Party said today that Maltese businesses were discriminated against, and Shanghai Electric was preferred in the allocation of space for photovoltaic units.

Shadow Minister Marthese Portelli said the government had transferred almost 400,000 sq metres of land to Shanghai Electric Power at 50c per sq metre so that the company could use it for its photovoltaic business.

Yet Maltese businesses had been invited to rent space on the roofs Malta Industrial Parks buildings at €3.35 per square metre.

The following is the letter they received -

“Further to the above we are undertaking an initiative whereby occupiers of MIP property will be given the opportunity to benefit from income from the generation of electricity from PV panels installed on the available roof areas … In all cases, the rental rate for the roof will be €3.35 per square metre per annum excluding VAT.”
