A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter Scale struck beneath Papua New Guinea in the southern Pacific Ocean in the early hours of March 30 (largest red circle on the global map). A tsunami warning was issued for the countries across the Pacific. Although the earthquake shaking panicked local residents, there were no reports of damage or casualties. This lower-than-expected damage was due to the fact that the earthquake took place at a depth of over 40km. Locally, four earthquakes struck around 120km to the northwest of Malta (red stars). Three took place on March 19 and another on March 1. If readers felt earthquake-related shaking on these dates they are encouraged to report their experience through the online questionnaire found at http://seismic.research.um.edu.mt .
