A team of students from St Martin’s College won the eighth edition of the Mathematics Olympiad. It was the first time the college took part in the competition, which is organised by the Education Division’s Mathematics Department and the Malta Mathematical Society.

The team, composed of Mark Mallia, Michaela Zammit and Andrea Calleja, coached by Steve Zammit, competed against 36 teams from other schools. Mallia scored 44 marks out of 45 in the individual part of the competition. In the second section, the team as a whole had to answer 15 mental multiple-choice questions without using calculators. In the third section the team tackled nine open questions requiring a sound knowledge and understanding of mathematical and logical thinking skills.
