A talk by Tony Abela, titled ‘WWII Radars and military History at Dingli’ is being organised by Din l-Art Ħelwa on Thursday at 6.30pm at their premises in Melita Street, Valletta, at 6.30pm.
The speaker will look into what role Malta played in British radar experimental stage and during WWII and give detailed information about the radars at Dingli.
Abela will highlight how the Germans and Italians took some time until they realised that Malta’s defence was backed with such advanced systems. He will expand on the enemy’s efforts to disable the systems through radar jamming .
A brief mention will be made of the navy and army engagements at Dingli during World War II, mainly as Intelligence Services and Coast Guard duties, respectively.
Abela Joined the RAF (Malta) in January 1961 as ground radio mechanic. After receiving the basic technical training in the UK, he was posted at Ta’ Qali control tower and then to Madalena radar up to 1965. In 1983 he was promoted to major.
Abela is the author of the book Malta’s Early Warning System During World War II, which was published in March 2014.
The talk will be delivered in English and is free. However, a donation in aid of the NGO’s restoration projects is appreciated.
