I know I don’t is an exhibition by Giola Cassar that explores personal identity and the idiosyncratic things that make a person unique and identifiable to others.

The works aim to explore the identity and the meaning of identity, in the space and time we live in. Cassar does this by acknowledging that various aspects that make up identity exist, while exploring it in the context of the relation to self and to others, using her personal experiences and trying to translate them to universal ones.

The exhibition came about following Cassar’s participation in Divergent Thinkers in 2012 at St James Cavalier as a result of which the artist was awarded her first solo exhibition, which brings together two bodies of work: Portrayal and Someone I Knew. In Portrayal Cassar seeks to explore the concept of identity through the most malleable of features... the hair.

In Someone I Knew, the focus shifts from the identity to the complex path of memory. The character, Sam, is a representation of who we have loved and lost through the passage of time.

Cassar’s work aims to explore the identity through the self and the other in the space and time we live in. Intrigued by this ongoing struggle of adjusting and finding different places and roles in the world, the artist makes use of her personal experiences and tries to translate them to universal ones.

The exhibition is curated by Alexandra Pace and organised with the support of St James Cavalier and Aġenzija Żgħażagħ.

I Know I don’t opens on Saturday and runs until May 3 at St James Cavalier, Valletta.
