The Electoral Commission dismissed 10 assistant electoral commissioners this morning after incidents at Sa Maison home for the elderly and during early voting at Naxxar counting hall.

Informed sources said the first incident took place at Sa Maison private old people’s home when a person who was not eligible to vote today walked in, was given a ballot paper and submitted his vote.

In the second incident, a person who was eligible for early voting in the Paola ballot box at Naxxar counting hall cast his vote in the Sta Lucija ballot box instead.

The mistake was noted immediately, but nothing could be done about it.

The assistant electoral commissioners in each voting station – five each nominated by the political parties and the Electoral Commission, were dismissed.

People who will be abroad next Saturday, hospital patients and residents in 25 old people's homes (each having more than 50 residents) are allowed to vote in the referendum and the local council elections today. Voting is taking place at the hospitals, the homes and Naxxar vote-counting complex.

VOTING AT LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR

Meanwhile, voting at the Little Sisters of the Poor home in Hamrun was briefly suspended when Electoral Commission officials ran out of ballot papers.

Voting was suspended until another batch was brought in.
