Malta International Airport this morning welcomed Finnair with a water salute and a cake-cutting ceremony.

Finland’s largest airline began operating twice weekly flights to and from Helsinki today.

Those on board today's first flight included Malta’s Ambassador in Finland Michael Zammit Tabona.

The airline chose Malta as part of its summer expansion across European destinations and will be flying directly to and from Malta International Airport with timetables designed for optimal connections with Finnair's network of Asian destinations.

Finnair offers a faster northern route to an extensive network of destinations, including 15 major cities in Asia (Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, Xian, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Delhi, Seoul and Singapore) and over 60 destinations in Europe. In summer 2015, Finnair will also operate flights to Chicago and Toronto.

Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis welcomed Finnair and said the direct service Helsinki fit exactly within Malta’s new tourism policy and strategy; and in particular with the country's objective to further develop the Scandinavian market.
