Updated 9pm - Parliament this evening held its last sitting in the Palace.

The House adjourned to May 4, when it is due to meet in the new Parliament House at city gate.

The House of Representatives has been sitting at the Palace ever since it was established (originally as the Legislative Assembly) in 1921.

It originally met in the Tapestry Chamber and then moved to the former Armoury in August 1976. That Chamber, in use till today, was designed by architect Richard England and was inaugurated by President Anthony Mamo in June 1976.

The Speaker, Anglu Farrugia, said when today’s sitting got under way that some parliamentary staff have already moved to the new Parliament building.

Tests started today on the audio system and some shortcomings were identified.

Tests of various other systems, including TV streaming, still have to be made. His target, he said, is to have everything certified in two weeks’ time, so that a definitive decision can be taken to move.

Should that happen, a formal ceremony will be held on May 4 and the first sitting will  be held later that day.
