Italian pianist Michelangelo Carbonara and his South Korean cellist wife, Kyung Mi Lee, will be giving a recital of works by Fryderyk Chopin, Carl Reinecke, Joseph Vella and César Franck at the Kempinski San Lawrenz Hotel, Gozo, on April 18. Proceeds will go in aid of two Gozo-based charities.

This is the seventh consecutive year that Carbonara is performing to help The Friends of the Sick and the Elderly (FSE) in Gozo and Happy Moments Kenya. He and his wife are well-known for their musicianship and rapport.

Over the past 25 years, FSE Gozo, a non-profit NGO, has donated numerous items of essential medical and nursing equipment to institutions caring for the sick and the elderly. More recently, it has been lending motorised nursing beds, nursing hoists and wheelchairs, among other items, to facilitate bed-bound persons in the Gozo community being nursed by relatives in their own homes.

This kind of solidarity encourages families to stay together, helps reduce the number of hospital bed occupancy as well as caters for certain long-term ‘social cases’. So far this equipment loan project has helped 240 families. Demand for it averages one a week and since the equipment is not cheap, constant fund-raising is essential.

Happy Moments Kenya continues to collect funds for the purchase of an ambulance to transport patients along the rough roads leading to the Cottolengo Mission Hospital in a remote part of Kenya. A new laundry is also needed because the former laundry is being turned into a second maternity ward. Some of the money raised last year has also helped to pay for the treatment of elderly patients at the Nanyuki Cottage Hospital. HMK also supports a kindergarten for 50 children and pays for their uniforms, one meal a day, covers the salary of the teacher and cook as well as the food and clean drinking water.

The recital will be followed by an optional three-course dinner at the Kempinksi’s Trattoria Restaurant during which patrons can meet the performers. A choice of meat, fish or vegetarian main course dishes is available.

Tickets for the concert cost €30 while dinner costs €40 per head, including wine, coffee or tea. For more information, contact Sonja Sinclair Stevenson on 2156 2074 or fax 2156 3396.
