Opposition to spring hunting comes in many laughable ways.In a pathetic attempt, Stanley Farrugia Randon sticks his neckout saying “fishermen havenothing to fear from the spring hunting referendum”.

Ironically, with widespread illegal fishing in all our harbours, bays and around our shores, he dares say: “Rules and regulations are already in place to ensure fishermen behave sustainably.”

Farrugia Randon must either be living in a dream world or sees no problem in being used to support a cause he might believe in, while having no idea what it actually concerns.

The fish in our bays, harbours and sea have been depleted in front of his own eyes, our fish market regularly receives fish bursting with roe and yet he has the auda-city to say: “Fishermen know how to ensure that the fish they catch do not affect the fish they will catch in the future. This is because we do not go fishing during the breeding season.”

He makes the deplorable state of uncontrolled fishing in Malta even more worrying when quoting Mark Bencini saying: “My analysis clearly shows that a referendum on fishing would remove the regulations that exist.”

His argument that “fishing is regulated by law and not allowed by it” is defeated should fishing be subjected to an abrogative referendum which quite frankly is legally very possible.

Would he rather fishing is less regulated than it currently is? Perhaps he should consider sticking to reality.
