Three new General Workers Union-affiliated unions grouping policemen, soldiers and correctional officers are formally requesting recognition as trade union representatives of those sectors, GWU general secretary Tony Zarb announced this morning.

Addressing a news conference at the union’s headquarters in Valletta, Mr Zarb said that the three unions already had more than 800 members between them.
During the event representatives from Police Officers Union, Armed Forces Union and the Correctional Officers Union formally signed the affiliation agreement with the GWU.

Members of disciplined forces were granted the right to join a trade union following a law which came into force last month. However they do not have the right to strike.

Mr Zarb said that this was a historic day for the GWU. He noted than in just a few days the unions had received hundreds of membership applications. He said that the next step would be for these three union to seek affiliation with European and International organisations.
